"The Oxbow" is the title of a landscape painting by Thomas Cole (1801–1848), the founder of the Hudson River School.
This painting is a romantic panorama of the Connecticut River valley immediately after a thunderstorm, and has been interpreted as a contrast between wilderness and civilization.

Joel Sternfeld, a photographer from New York, revisited the site in 2006 and re-photographed it over a period of about a year and a half.
He is said to have gone to this place almost every day from southern Vermont, where he lives (a three-hour drive each way).
